Patients sign up for primary care pharmacy services in their droves

In the first week since its opening, over 1,000 members of the public have registered for medicines management services that are being offered at the Primary Care Pharmacy in Tamworth, Staffordshire (PJ, 7 July, p6).

Andrew Burr, the owner of the concept pharmacy, says: “It is evident that the public want to know more about medicines and value the support and help our clinical pharmacists can provide.”

Registration for services allows pharmacists at the Primary Care Pharmacy to have access, with the patient’s consent, to medical records.

Mr Burr describes this as a tremendous step forward for the profession because access to the information contained in patient’s notes will assist the pharmacists when advising patients and GPs about best use of medicines.

Correction
This report should have indicated that pharmacists have access to patients' notes only after the consent of the general practitioner has been obtained in addition to that of the patient.
