PGDs

Sharing needed

From Mrs M. M. Keyworth, FRPharmS

I was interested to read about the patient group direction that has been developed in East Kent for tackling teenage pregnancy. A similar approach has been taken at South Humber Health Authority. A PGD was launched on 13 April under which, as with the East Kent PGD, women aged under 20 years can obtain Levonelle-2 free from designated pharmacies. The first progress report of the scheme has now been presented to the health authority board and the initiative has attracted interest and support from the health community and the local media.

The article prompted me to question whether there is a database of established PGDs under construction. It was asserted that the East Kent PGD differed from others, whereas it appears to be almost identical to the South Humberside one.

I am sure access to such shared information would be beneficial. Not only would it save considerable time and effort when developing PGDs but would also provide feedback of the results and recommendations where there are similar developments.

Madeleine Keyworth
Brigg,
North Lincolnshire

There is a website where approved PGDs can be displayed at www.groupprotocols.org.uk (see PJ, 18 November 2000, p755).
