No association found between analgesics and renal dysfunction
in healthy men
Moderate use of paracetamol, aspirin, and other non-steroidal
analgesics by healthy men does not increase their risk of renal dysfunction,
a study has shown (JAMA (2001;286:315).
Dr Kathryn Rexrode of Brigham and Womens Hospital,
Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues found that mean creatinine levels
and creatinine clearances were similar among men who did not use analgesics
and those who did, including men who reported intakes of more than three
to four tablets per week over the study period.
Even in the high risk group of men aged over 60
years there was no significant trend towards increased creatinine levels.
The research was done because previous studies had
suggested an association between prolonged use of analgesics and chronic
renal disease.
