Dry mouth

Sugar-free gum is effective

From Mrs C. Stillman-Lowe

Regarding the dietary advice tips on mouth problems (PJ, June 30, p877), I would like to refer readers to an article by Dr R. S. Levine (BDA News, May 2001, pp30–31). He points out, for example, that sugar-free chewing gum is effective and convenient for promoting saliva stimulation. This product is readily available in many pharmacies, and was omitted from Dr Mason’s list of tips. Conversely, Dr Levine differs from Dr Mason in her unqualified recommendation of boiled sweets — this suggestion he regards as suitable only for full denture wearers. He concludes that apart from measures to alleviate the symptoms, “it is essential to institute an appropriate preventive regimen for dentate patients to reduce the risks of caries, erosion and periodontal disease”.
