Margarine-rich diet linked to asthma
A diet rich in polyunsaturated fats is associated
with a rise in the incidence of asthma in pre-school children, a study
has shown.
Researchers from Australia looked at the incidence
of asthma in almost 1,000 children aged between three and five years.
Parents of the children completed a questionnaire that included questions
on asthma diagnosis and symptoms of asthma experienced by their child
in the preceding 12 months. They were also asked about the childs diet.
They found that a diet high in polyunsaturated fat
(ie, bread usually eaten with margarine and foods regularly fried in polyunsaturated
vegetable oils) more than doubled the risk for developing asthma. (Thorax
