Neo-Cortef drops and ointment

Neo-Cortef eye/ear drops and ointment, from Dominion Pharma, are not likely to be available until late 2002. This is due to difficulties in obtaining sterile hydrocortisone acetate. SPC changes

Rebif injection

The summary of product characteristics for Rebif (interferon beta-1a) injection from Serono has been updated. The revised SPC states that, should refrigeration be temporarily unavailable, patients can store Rebif below 25C for up to 30 days. It should then be put back in the refrigerator and used before the expiry date.

Counter medicines

Doublebase gel

Dermal Laboratories has launched Doublebase gel. It is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of dry or chapped skin conditions which may also be itchy or inflamed. It can also be used as an adjunct to other topical treatments. Doublebase is available through wholesalers as a 100g tube (net price, £2.98) and 500g dispenser (net price, £6.55).

Discontinued products

Lingraine and Fortagesic

Sanofi-Synthelabo is discontinuing Lingraine (ergotamine tartrate) 2mg sublingual tablets and Fortagesic (pentazocine hydrochloride and paracetamol) tablets.

The following pack sizes have also been discontinued: Hexopal (inositol nicotinate) 500mg tablets, pack size 500; Hexopal 750mg tablets forte, pack size 250; and Calciparine (heparin calcium) 20,000 IU 0.8ml syringe.

These discontinuations take effect immediately. Further information on the Lingraine and Fortagesic discontinuations can be obtained from the Sanofi-Synthelabo medical information department (tel 01483 554919). Chemo-Trans-Waste bag

Helapet has launched the Chemo-Trans-Waste bag for use in transporting prepared chemotherapy products from hospital aseptic manufacturing units to the patient. The sterile bag can also be used for disposing of waste packaging, vials, syringes, etc, that are used in the preparation of these products. Chemo-Trans-Waste bag is made of polyethylene and has “write-on” panels for the contents, date of manufacture and patient’s name. The bag is available from Helapet (tel 01582 501980).

Meditimer medication reminder

Tempatron has launched Meditimer, an electronic medication reminder. It works by sounding an alarm and flashing a display (according to pre-set instructions) every time a dose is due. The device also has a storage tray for medication. The company says that the product will be especially useful for some elderly and disabled patients. Meditimer (price, £24.99) is available from Tempatron (tel 0118 975 1999).

Veinguard anti-DVT cushion

Hughes DVT Cushions has introduced Veinguard for reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis during long journeys. The company says that the cushion helps to exercise the legs, ankles and feet. The portable cushion is placed under the feet and exercises can be performed while seated in accordance with instructions which accompany the product. Veinguard is currently only available directly from the company (tel 01935 814360) at a retail price of £14.95, including postage and packaging, but will soon be made available through wholesalers.
