An occasional feature, prepared in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Professional Standards Directorate, to highlight problems and inquiries currently being handled

Dispensing products in patient packs

Pharmacists should be vigilant when dispensing medicinal products in manufacturers’ original containers. The Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s inspectors have come across signs of poor practice that could result in a patient pack of medicines containing something other than the labelled contents.

Pharmacists must ensure that the manufacturer’s pack contains the correct medication and quantity before dispensing. When selecting a product for dispensing, pharmacists are advised to open every container that is not security sealed to ensure that the pack contains the correct medication in the correct strength and quantity.

This check should be in addition to a pharmacist’s usual dispensing and checking procedures.
