New telephone system allows direct access to headquarters staff

On 6 August the Royal Pharmaceutical Society is introducing a new headquarters telephone system that allows direct access to all staff and services without going through the switchboard. The main switchboard number (+44 (0)20 7735 9141) remains available and can still be used to make connections, using new four-digit extension numbers.

All HQ staff have been given training in using the new system. In addition, guidelines for handling telephone calls have been distributed to staff as part of the Society’s strategy for improving communication with members. The guidelines aim to introduce a consistent approach to the handling of telephone calls and to help prevent bad practice.

To assist members in contacting Society staff, a card bearing detailed contact information is being distributed with this issue of The Journal to all members of the Society, including those resident overseas. The Society asks members to retain the card for future reference.

The front of the card gives a guide to telephone numbers for more than 50 of the Society’s main activities. For the sake of completeness, it also repeats the existing numbers for other Society sites, such as the Scottish Department and the Welsh Executive office.

Where a section or service is not specifically listed, callers are advised to use the main switchboard number.

The reverse of the card carries the direct-dial telephone numbers for 30 key members of the Society’s staff. It also lists a number of other useful telephone numbers, including those for the Society’s membership and special interest groups and for the Benevolent Fund and Birdsgrove House.

Also included on the reverse of the card is contact information such as Society website addresses and advice on how to contact the Society by e-mail. (Members should note that the information given about the convention used for constructing HQ staff e-mail addresses does not apply to Pharmaceutical Journal staff, who may be e-mailed at forename.surname@pharmj.org.uk.)
