Breaking bulk in veterinary pharmacy

The Veterinary Pharmacists Group Committee wishes to remind veterinary pharmacists that the practice of breaking bulk from a licensed product into smaller repackaged items for sale would be viewed by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate as the illegal production of unlicensed products, unless an assembly licence is held.

The view has been expressed, however, that, subsequent to the sale of a product, the purchaser of the product can request the pharmacist to break down the product and repackage it into smaller quantities for the purchaser’s use.

Pharmacists should be aware however, that mixing two or more products, even upon the request of the purchaser, is effectively creating an unlicensed product, in which the compatibility and stability of the combined products could be affected and which would have no guarantee of efficacy. Pharmacists should exercise caution when mixing products after they have been sold, because they will be liable should the products deteriorate or if incompatibilities arise.
