Guild’s opposition to aspirin availability

The Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists has declared its opposition to a proposal to increase the availability of aspirin 75mg tablets from non-pharmacy outlets.

In a response to the Medicines Control Agency consultation on the proposal (PJ, 30 June), the guild says that there is no need for low-dose aspirin to be more widely available through general stores because there is a good network of community pharmacies throughout the United Kingdom.

The principal reason given for the guild’s opposition is the difficulty of making effective drug recalls from non-pharmacy outlets. It refers the MCA to the fact that aspirin 75mg tablets labelled for use in children under 12 years old remained available from general stores for a number of years after such use was discontinued because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
