Pharmacy numbers show little change
Pharmacy numbers in England and Wales changed little
in the past year, according to the latest statistics from the Department
of Health.
On 31 March 2001 there were 10,482 National Health
Service pharmacy contracts with health authorities in England and Wales,
four fewer than the year before. During the year 36 pharmacies opened
and 40 closed. The number of pharmacies in contract with each health authority
changed by no more than four. Half of all pharmacies were paid to provide
additional agreed hours of service beyond the NHS terms of service and
34 per cent were paid to give advice to residential or nursing homes.
Essential Small Pharmacies Scheme payments were made to 265 pharmacies.
The figures were published in a Department of Health
press notice [2001/0346]. The remainder of the data collected from health
authorities and published in an annual statistical bulletin will not be
available for some time, the department said.
