Special General Meeting

Confirmation of costs, please

From Mr P. Walton, MRPharmS

I was interested to read in Stan Wheatley’s letter (PJ, 7 July) that the special general meeting was “convened at a cost that the [Royal Pharmaceutical] Society can ill afford”. With respect to the SGM itself, I asked the question of the cost on the day and was given a tentative figure of between £5,000 and £10,000. I believe this figure is considerably less than some individual members of Council claim as annual expenses. Members who call for SGMs do so at their own cost, and thus do not do so lightly. I would like confirmation and a brief breakdown of the costs to the Society.

Philip Walton
Manchester

ANN LEWIS (Secretary and Registrar, Royal Pharmaceutical Society) replies:

The direct costs of staff, Council and facilities, such as catering, security and cloakroom, was in the region of £2,600. This does not include administration and preparation costs leading up to the event or the opportunity costs.
