The Society

Internet project too late

From Mr S. Whitaker, MRPharmS

The announcement that the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has discontinued its pilot scheme to offer members internet access and a Society e-mail address almost a year after it was first announced (PJ, 18 August) came two days before the results of a survey by internet research company Jupiter MMXI which revealed that over 33 million Britons already use the internet. Although the aim of providing pharmacists with a hand to hold as they take their first steps on the internet might have been a good idea five years ago, it now seems like an embarrassing anachronism.

I am sure that we, the members, whatever the expense of this project to date, would much prefer that further expenditure be redirected to the furtherance of PJ Online’s technical development and the provision of electronic library access. Members will find their own way around the internet. (If we are representative of the population as a whole, then nearly two thirds of us already have.)

Simon Whitaker
Bicester, Oxfordshire
