News summary

Cerivastatin withdrawn worldwide

Cerivastatin (Lipobay) has been withdrawn in Japan, the last country in which this action has been taken.

Bayer announced on 23 August that the decision was made in the interests of patient safety and because the Japanese authorities had informed the company that gemfibrozil (which is currently not available in Japan) was soon to be registered there.

Cerivastatin was withdrawn in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world on 8 August because of concerns over muscle toxicity, particularly when used concomitantly with gemfibrozil (PJ, August 11, p181).
