Doctors details on GMC websiteDoctors registration details can now be checked on the internet. On 27 August, the General Medical Council launched a section on its website (www.gmc-uk.org), which members of the public can use to check whether someone practising medicine is registered as a medical practitioner in the United Kingdom. Users can enter doctors names or registration numbers to find out when they were registered and what their basic qualifications are. The area of the country in which they practise is also given, but precise details are not provided. The online search facility does not give details of doctors who hold limited registration (doctors from outside the European Union who are undergoing supervised postgraduate training), doctors on the GMCs overseas list or doctors whose registration is subject to conditions or suspended. The GMC warns that the information is provided on the internet for guidance only: inclusion of a name should not be taken as proof of registration, nor should the absence of a name be taken to mean that a doctor is not registered. |
