Prescription Products

Zomig Rapimelt

AstraZeneca is launching Zomig Rapimelt (zolmitriptan) 2.5mg oro-dispersible tablets for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura. The formulation is an orange-flavoured tablet that melts on the tongue. Available from September 3 (net price, 6 £24).

Ofloxacin tablets

Legap Pharmaceuticals is launching ofloxacin tablets (net price, 200mg 10 £11.29, 400mg 5 £11.26 10 £22.46, prices corrected 24/Sep/2001). APS/Berk is also launching ofloxacin tablets (net price, 200mg 10 £13.64, 400mg 5 £13.62).

Generics (UK) products

Generics (UK) has launched the following products:

bendrofluazide tablets (net price, 2.5mg 28 74p, 5mg 28 73p)

glibenclamide tablets (net price, 2.5mg 28 96p, 5mg 28 £1.21)

Beta-cardone tablets

The pack size of Celltech Pharmaceuticals’s Beta-cardone (sotalol hydrochloride) tablets has been changed from 30 to 28 tablets. The container is now packaged in a carton with a patient information leaflet enclosed. The price remains the same (net price, 28 £4.15).

Hytrin tablets

Terazosin tablets from Abbott Laboratories will now be available under the trade name Hytrin for both its hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia indications. The product was previously available in separate packs for each indication, as Hytrin and Hytrin BPH. Separate starter packs for each indication will remain available, however, the packaging for Hytrin will now state “Hytrin starter pack for hypertension” and the Hytrin BPH packaging will state “Hytrin starter pack for benign prostatic hyperplasia”.

Distamine tablets

Supplies of Dista Products’s Distamine (penicillamine) 125mg and 250mg tablets should be ordered from Alliance Pharmaceuticals (tel 01249 466974, fax 01249 466976). Dista Products will continue to provide medical information for the product (tel 01256 315000).

SPC changes

Exelon capsules

The summary of product characteristics for Novartis Pharmaceuticals’s Exelon (rivastigmine) capsules has been updated. The following statement has been added to the posology and method of administration section: “Re-initiation of therapy: if treatment is interrupted for more than several days, it should be re-initiated at 1.5mg twice daily. Dose titration should then be carried out as described.” The statement referring to initiation of treatment has been moved from the special warning and precautions for use section to the posology and method of administration section.

Tegretol and Tegretol Retard

Additions have been made to the interactions section of the summary of product characteristics for all formulations of Tegretol (carbamazepine) and Tegretol Retard. Ritonavir has been added to the list of agents that may raise carbamazepine plasma levels. The statement “mefloquine may antagonise the anticonvulsant effect of carbamazepine” has been added to the list of agents that may decrease carbamazepine plasma levels. Levothyroxine, dihydropyridine derivatives (eg, felodipine and isradipine) indinavir, saquinavir, ritonavir, tramadol, gestrinone, tibolone, toremifene, olanzapine and risperidone have been added to the list of drugs that may require a dosage change.

Zithromax suspension

The instructions for reconstituting Pfizer’s Zithromax (azithromycin) 200mg oral suspension have been amended. The summary of product characteristics says that for the 600mg (15ml) pack the powder should be reconstituted with 9ml of water, for the 900ml (22.5ml) pack 12ml of water should be added to the powder and for the 1,200mg (30ml) pack 15ml of water should be added. The concentration of reconstituted suspension (200mg/5ml) is not affected by this change.

Products miscellany

Lemsip Children’s Vapo-patches

Lemsip Children’s Vapo-patches have been launched by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare. The patches, which are impregnated with camphor and eucalyptus oil, are suitable for children aged two years and over and can be stuck onto night-clothes (retail price, 5 patches £3.69).

Effervescent echinacea

Healthcrafts is launching Health-crafts Effervesent Echinacea tablets containing Echinacea purpurea 1g per tablet. The recommended dose is one tablet daily dissolved in a glass of water. The product is not recommended for children under the age of 12 (retail price, 20 £4.49).

Fresenius Kabi sip feeds

Fresenius Kabi has reformulated its range of sip feeds to comply with the EU Directive 1999/21/EC (Foods for Special Medical Purposes). Three of the products in the range have also been renamed. Fresubin is now called Fresubin Original, Entera is now Fresubin Energy and Entera Fibre is called Fresubin Energy. All three formulations have had b-carotene added. The quantities of micronutrients have been increased. Resistant starch fibre has been added to Fresubin Energy Fibre.

Multibionta 50+ tablets

Seven Seas is launching Advanced Formula Multibionta 50+ tablets for people aged 50 years and over. One tablet should be taken daily (retail price, 30 £4.79, 60 £8.39).
