World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Singapore to become a “world class hub” for biomedical sciences

Lim Hng Kiang: Singapore has attracted some major biotechnological companies

The congress was officially opened by Lim Hng Kiang, Singapore’s minister for health and second minister for finance. Welcoming participants to the congress, he told them that Singapore was developing biomedical sciences as the fourth pillar of the country’s manufacturing sector alongside the electronics, chemical and engineering sectors. “Our intent is to develop Singapore into a world-class biomedical sciences hub with capabilities across the whole value chain from basic and clinical research to product and process development, full-scale manufacturing, regional headquarters activities and health care delivery,” he said.

Singapore had been able to attract major pharmaceutical, biotechnological, medical devices and health care services companies to invest in it. With the country’s continuing investments in human capital development and research and development capabilities, Mr Lim believed that Singapore was well positioned to grow this industry further.
