New school medicines role for pharmacists

Pharmacists have a role to play in matters related to the administration of medicines in schools, according to new Scottish guidance.

A booklet produced by the Scottish Executive says: “Pharmacists employed by primary care trusts provide pharmaceutical advice to school health services.”

It further says that some community services pharmacists also work closely with local authority education departments and give advice on the management of medicines within schools. This can involve helping to prepare policies related to medicines in schools and training school staff. In particular, they can advise on the storage, handling, dispensing and disposal of medicines.

The guidelines add that when individual schools want to draw up policies for the safe storage and handling of medicines, they should be able to get help with this from primary care trust chief pharmacists.
