Benefits of chemoradiation
Concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy improves survival
rate in women with cervical cancer compared with radiotherapy alone, a
systematic review of 19 studies has concluded.
The absolute benefit for chemoradiation in progression-free
survival was 16 per cent and in overall survival was 12 per cent. The
rate of local recurrence was significantly reduced by chemoradiation.
In addition, chemoradiation resulted in a significant reduction in the
rate of development of distant metastases.
The authors comment that this effect on distant
metastases was not apparent in individual trials (Lancet 2001;358:781).
