Folic acid and miscarriage risk

Taking folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy has no influence on rate of miscarriage, researchers say.

A study of 23,806 women in China found that rate of miscarriage among women who had taken 400µg folic acid daily before and during the first trimester was 9.0 per cent compared with 9.3 per cent in those who had not taken the supplement. The authors comment that previous reports on the relation between folic acid and risk of miscarriage had been inconsistent. “[Our] findings do not support concerns about an increased risk for miscarriages associated with consumption of folic acid during pregnancy.” (Lancet 2001;358:796).
