Useful role for amfebutamone in obesity

Amfebutamone (bupropion, Zyban) could be a useful treatment for obesity, researchers from the United States have suggested.

A study of 50 non-depressed overweight or obese patients aged between 24 and 55 years received either amfebutamone or placebo for eight weeks with a calorie-restricted diet. After eight weeks, 67 per cent of those taking amfebutamone had lost more than 5 per cent of their body weight compared with 15 per cent of the placebo group.

Those receiving amfebutamone continued therapy for a further 16 weeks and lost an average of 12.9 per cent of their baseline body weight. The researchers say that the mechanism of action is unknown.

The study is published in the 12 September issue of Obesity Research.
