Ofloxacin linked with case of diabetes insipidus

A case of diabetes insipidus induced by the quinolone antibiotic ofloxacin (Tarivid) has been reported by Indian doctors.

The patient, a 25 year-old man, was treated with ofloxacin 200mg twice daily for pneumonia. Treatment resulted in him developing polyuria and excessive thirst. Ofloxacin was stopped and the symptoms normalised but after the drug was reintroduced, the symptoms recurred. The doctors say that this indicates a causal relationship but note that the mechanism of action is unclear (BMJ 2001;323:547).
