New centre for paediatric pharmacy research
A new centre for paediatric pharmacy research has been
formed in a joint initiative of the School of Pharmacy, the Institute
of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.
The centre will conduct research on paediatric medicines
with two main thrusts: formulation optimisation, including dosage form
design, drug delivery and pharmacokinetics; and the investigation of issues
surrounding medicines usage in children. It will also provide a locus
for the training of pharmacists and other health care professionals in
paediatric medication.
The post of director is advertised in this issue
of The Journal (pA39).
Paediatric medicines pose particular problems and
challenges, principally in the development of special for drug and gene
delivery and targeting, the design and study of special formulations,
their routes of administration and pharmacokinetics. This is combined
with practical issues of dosage calculation and administration, compliance
and concordance and a lack of information on adverse effects. A recent
report said that children should not be given medicines that had not been
elauated for them.
