Novartis a discredit to the industry

Novartis has brought discredit on, and reduced confidence in, the pharmaceutical industry, the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority has ruled.

The PMCPA gave its ruling after considering a complaint from a general practitioner that Novartis employees had changed patients’ prescriptions for statins to the company’s Lescol (fluvastatin) product and from sartans to the Novartis product Diovan (valsartan) without his knowledge.

The doctor had given permission for an audit of his statin prescribing. The Novartis employees involved in the audit believed that they had also been given permission to change the prescriptions.
