Progress made on pharmacist prescribing, says President
Progress is being made on the development of pharmacist
prescribing, the President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (Marshall
Davies) says in a letter to the chairman of the Young Pharmacists Group
(Alastair Buxton).
The President was replying to an open letter sent
by Mr Buxton, which asked what progress was being made on pharmacist prescribing
and who was accountable for this.
Mr Davies says that pharmacist prescribing has been
a consistent theme of the work of the Society since the Pharmacy in a
New Age initiative. The health departments in England, Scotland and Wales
have all signalled that they intend to implement pharmacist prescribing
at some stage. Enabling legislation for this was enacted earlier this
year. The Society has established a task group under the chairmanship
of Dr June Crown. Dr Crown was closely involved in developing nurse prescribing
and reporting on how it could be extended to other professions. The task
group met again on 21 September and is expected to issue a report before
the end of next year.
The President concludes: I do hope that the Young
Pharmacists Group will continue to be supportive of the Society as we
progress this important work.
