Welsh Assembly consults on clinical governance

A strategy for developing a consistent approach to improving quality across the National Health Service in Wales was issued for consultation on 1 October.

“Clinical governance — developing a strategic approach” identifies a number of areas of importance, including:

  • Better partnership with patients and the public
  • Learning lessons and sharing good practice
  • Ensuring staff support through continuous professional development

Welsh health minister Jane Hutt said: “The aim of clinical governance is to ensure that the clinical care, patients’ experiences and outcomes provided by organisations are of the highest quality.” A support package for clinical governance includes:

  • £500,000 for patient advocacy and support
  • £500,000 for the development of core skills related to clinical governance
  • £330,000 for subscriptions to knowledge bases on the Health of Wales Information System website
  • £400,000 a year for three years for education and awareness information management
  • £18m over three years to support clinical governance in GP surgeries, including the upgrading of all GP computer systems
