Welsh penalty charges introduced

Penalty charges for people in Wales who fraudulently claim exemption from prescription charges are to be introduced on 1 November 2001. The first penalty charge notices, for offences backdated to the beginning of November, will be issued on 1 January 2002.

Penalty charges are civil fines payable by people who fraudulently obtain relief from NHS charges, whether for themselves or on behalf of somebody else.
