Open House visitors impressed by Societys headquarters architecture
More than 100 visitors took the opportunity to visit
the Royal Pharmaceutical Societys Lambeth headquarters building on Sunday
23 September when it again opened to the public as part of London Open
House Weekend, the annual celebration of the capitals architecture.
Caroline Reed, curator of the Societys museum,
told The Journal that the visitors were generally enthusiastic
about the well-preserved interiors of the assembly hall, the committee
rooms and the Council dining room and were particularly impressed by the
grandeur of the Council chamber.
The visitors, who included some Society members,
were guided in small groups through five floors of the building by museum
staff and colleagues from the information centre, backed by a team of
volunteers drawn from members, museum supporters and the Open House organisation
itself. The visitors were also able to enjoy the panoramic views of London
from the fifth floor roof terrace.
The Society has now taken part in London Open House
Weekend for four consecutive years. This years opening coincided with
the 25th anniversary of the Societys move into its new building, which
took place in September 1976 after 135 years in Bloomsbury Square.
Ms Reed added that the success of the event was
in part due to librarian Roddy Morrison, information pharmacist Rachel
Norton and volunteers R. N. Banerjee, Larry Marden and Muriel Wilson,
who helped to keep the Open House visitors well informed and on the move.
