Staff at best NHS trusts to share £3.5m bonuses
National Health Service staff, including some pharmacists,
are to get bonuses if they meet corporate performance targets. Ten top
performing NHS trusts are to share funding of £3.5m to pay the bonuses.
The move, announced by John Hutton, Minister of
State at the Department of Health, on 10 October is part of the Governments
drive to link performance with rewards in the NHS and to provide incentives
for hospitals to improve. It follows the introduction of star-ratings
to measure the performance of NHS acute trusts last month. Mr Hutton said:
It is now time to reward the best in the NHS. These proposals for team
bonuses were drawn up by front line staff and managers. Staff covered
by the schemes, which the Department says include cardiac and stroke teams,
pharmacy and ambulance staff, have to meet performance targets over and
above their normal workload, including waiting times targets, reduced
absenteeism, improved staff recruitment and retention rates, reduced reliance
on nurse agencies and higher levels of public satisfaction.
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS
Trust intends to offer all its staff a £600 reward if their targets are
met. Others intend to provide improvement funds for staff, which could
be used to pay for training and new facilities.
A second wave of performance bonuses is to see up
to five more three-star trusts receive £1.5m for performance bonuses.
