Pharmaceutical care post in Scotland
Implementation of an agenda for developing model schemes
for pharmaceutical care in Scotland is now to go ahead following the appointment
of a project director based at the premises of the Royal Pharmaceutical
Society in Scotland.
The new director, Anna Marie McGregor, will establish
and lead a small team of part-time pharmacist facilitators located across
Scotland. The team will work with primary care trust chief pharmacists
and community pharmacy representatives to identify examples of good practice
in existing model schemes. It will also facilitate the roll-out in Scotland
of existing model schemes in community pharmacy for palliative care, the
frail elderly, and patient with severe and enduring mental illness. And
it will work with officials of the Scottish Executive Department of Health
to develop further model schemes.
The project is a joint initiative of the Department
of Health and the Societys Scottish Department. Miss McGregor will report
to the Scottish Executives chief pharmaceutical officer, Bill Scott,
through an advisory group, but the project administration will be the
responsibility of the Secretary of the RPSiS, Dr Sheila Stevens. The project
is funded through primary care development monies.
Miss McGregor has 14 years experience of combining
the management of pharmacy businesses with the development and implementation
of new pharmacy services, including a methadone programme, clinical audit
and pharmaceutical care practice. She has worked as a local health care
co-operative co-ordinator and has chaired the Glasgow LHCC pharmacy network.
Commenting on her appointment, Miss McGregor said:
I believe a great deal of good work is already happening. We do not want
to reinvent the wheel but to use all the resources available to us in
a more structured way.
