Anthrax update

The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved doxycycline for the treatment of anthrax.

The FDA announced on 18 October that doxycycline could be used to treat all forms of anthrax at an adult dose of 100mg every 12 hours. The FDA is currently developing information about the use of antibiotics to treat anthrax. No treatments are licensed specifically for anthrax in the United Kingdom.

In Canada, the government has reached an agreement with Bayer for the supply of one million ciprofloxacin tablets within 48 hours of a request being made. The agreement follows an earlier move by the Canadian government to order supplies of generic ciprofloxacin despite the fact that Bayer's patent on the drug has not expired.
