East Hampshire to host ETP pilot

East Hampshire Primary Care Trust is to host an electronic transfer of prescriptions pilot trial run by the TransScript consortium.

The trial is expected to start in early December with one GP practice and four or five local pharmacies. Participation in the trial will be open to all pharmacies in the area that are able to install appropriate software.

For the purposes of the trial, patients who are already part of existing collection and delivery schemes for repeat prescriptions can give pharmacies consent to collect prescription data electronically. The prescriptions are then transmitted directly from the surgery to any pharmacy nominated by the patient for dispensing as normal. An endorsed version of the prescription is then sent electronically to the Prescription Pricing Authority for payment. At present, however, patients still have to complete paper declarations of exemption status.

Mr Strange said that patient consent is done at the pharmacy end to avoid the direction of prescriptions by GPs and to allow patients the widest choice of where they can collect their medicines.
