Provision of growth hormone to children in Birmingham
Fergus MacCallum and colleagues (Birmingham Children's
Hospital) reported on the provision of growth hormone to children in the
Birmingham Health Authority area. The aim was to develop a service for
the provision of growth hormone to children in the Birmingham area that
enabled monitoring and reporting of accurate data for measuring cost effectiveness,
treatment adherence and clinical outcomes. An integrated system of growth
hormone management across trust boundaries was implemented and has led
to enhanced concordance, improved treatment compliance and improved clinical
co-operation between primary and secondary care. Reliable clinical and
financial data are now available to use as clinical governance and managerial
tools. It has proved such a successful system it has recently been extended
to neighbouring health authorities, co-ordinated by the Birmingham Children's
Hospital pharmacy interface team. The project was the winner of the NPPG
Poster award for 2001.
