Neonatal and paediatric pharmacists group summary

Use of electronic prescribing for children

In a workshop on electronic prescribing, NEIL CALDWELL (Wirral Hospital), outlined the experience of using the system for children. Almost all prescribing in the hospital is undertaken electronically and approximately four million administrations are recorded each year. Although prescribing pathways are in place it is still possible for prescribers to prescribe wrong doses. Common dose ranges should be scheduled into electronic prescribing systems, decreasing the possibility for error. Electronic prescribing facilitates the delivery of pharmaceutical care and is an opportunity for pharmacists — not a threat.
