Modernising the NHS: roles for pharmacy

Ways in which community pharmacy can contribute to modernising the National Health Service are set out in a document, launched this week, produced by the South East Regional Forum of Local Pharmaceutical Committees.

The document, "Performance, improvement and modernisation in primary care: the role and contribution of community pharmacy", identifies priorities and provides examples of pharmacy services for each of the priorities.

Vanessa Taylor, secretary of the forum, and one of the authors of the document, said that it could be used by community pharmacists to provide ideas for services.

Robert Lea, prescribing and pharmaceutical adviser, NHS Executive, south east region, described the document as "an easily digestible, portable guide" that could be used to lodge the contribution that community pharmacy can make in the minds of people who decide on primary care priorities.

The National Pharmaceutical Society and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee have endorsed the document.
