New breast cancer treatment as effective as anastrozole
ICI 182,780, an oestrogen-receptor downregulator, is
as effective as the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole at treating breast
cancer, a combined analysis of two studies shows.
The studies compared monthly ICI 182,780 250mg injections
with daily oral anastrozole 1mg, in postmenopausal women whose breast
cancer had progressed after receiving previous endocrine therapy. The
analysis of both studies involved data from 851 patients.
ICI 182,780 works by binding to oestrogen receptors
in breast cancer cells, resulting in degradation and loss of the oestrogen
receptor. Professor Anthony Howell, Christie Hospital, Manchester, presenting
the data at the 11th European Cancer Conference (ECCO) in Lisbon last
week, said: "ICI 182,780 may provide a valuable additional and new treatment
option ... when other treatment options have failed or resistance has
developed."
