Tribute

Rutter In a tribute to the late Kenneth Richard Rutter (PJ, 29 September, p446, JOHN SCHOFIELD writes:

It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of my friend and colleague, K. R. Rutter, after a friendship of some 50 years. On behalf of all the members of the Leeds branch of the Society, I would like to pay tribute to Ken.

He was active in every section of pharmacy in this area, serving as chairman and secretary of both the Leeds pharmaceutical committee and the local branch of the National Pharmaceutical Association, as well chairman of the Society's branch. He also held office as a director of UniChem in its formative years. His period as national chairman proved of great help in subsequent discussions at local meetings.

It is my opinion that the enthusiasm and vigour he displayed in the aforesaid tasks could well have contributed to his subsequent ill health — he never refused a challenge. The setbacks in health that he endured did not deter him. He accepted them with fortitude and never a complaint. Even after major surgery he would just bounce back, supported by loving care from Bunty, his devoted wife of over 50 years.

In spite of all the adversity, he managed to run a thriving community pharmacy and when his son Richard qualified as a pharmacist he added a further four branches. At the same time, he continued, whenever health allowed, to live a happy and full life.

In expressing my deepest sympathy to Bunty, Richard and Kate, it is my sincere wish that they will take comfort from memories retained of his very full and happy life.
