Confidential information

I write in response to Philip Walton's comment regarding his reservations about the discussion of confidential information at an open public meeting of the Statutory Committee (PJ, 13 October, p508).

For information, during one inquiry the Statutory Committee set out the three circumstances that would persuade it to hear evidence in camera. I quote from the report in The Pharmaceutical Journal of 4 September 1999 (not the official transcript) at p347: "first, when the evidence involved a person's medical his-tory, particularly if it was of an intimate kind; secondly, if the evidence involved a young child; and thirdly, if the evidence involved an allegation of a serious nature against a third person who was unaware of the allegation and therefore not in a position to defend him or herself."
