Counter attack leads to sales recovery in chemist sundries

UniChem's "Counter attack" programme has reversed the shift of sales of toiletries and related products from community pharmacies to the grocery sector.

A reduction in sales from £7m a month in 1999 to £4m a month in 2000 has been reversed, leading to monthly sales of more than £5m in 2001. Toiletry sales are up 8 per cent, while the sector as a whole has declined by 16 per cent, and sales of baby products have risen by 7 per cent, when the sector is down 18 per cent.

Martyn Ward, UniChem's sales and marketing director, said: "Pharmacy said that it had lost these areas to grocery stores, and the supermarkets in particular. Counter attack has proved that we can reverse the sales decline."
