Pharmology.com set to go live in January 2002

Pharmology.com, Alliance-UniChem's international pharmacy business and consumer website, is to be fully launched in Britain in January 2002.

The website, which has been operating as a pilot in Britain, is also to be expanded to include online locum services and news. Future developments will include continuing professional development, compliance programs, market research and third-party offers, such as online wine-buying. Details of some of these are to be announced in about two weeks time.

Other developments will include e-detailing, clinical trial recruitment and market research.

E-detailing will mean that companies will be able to send product information and offers to pharmacy businesses without the need for personal visits from representatives. At least one, unnamed, company is considering managing without a field-force as a result.

Sue O'Donnell, pharmology.com's chief executive, expects clinical trials recruitment to start in 2003. She sees this as a way of shortening the time that it takes to conduct full-scale clinical trials for new products by using pharmacists' input to eliminate unsuitable patients from trials earlier so that replacement suitable patients can be recruited more quickly.

Companies will be expected to pay UniChem for the use of pharmology.com and some of this money will be paid as fees to participating pharmacies.
