Antibiotic targeting

Trying to reduce antibiotic prescribing might not be the most effective strategy to reduce resistance, researchers say.

The BMJ (BMJ 2001;323:1037) says that resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin and trimethoprim in urinary tract infections is common but has low correlation with prescribing rates. They favour targeted prescribing, such as for certain age groups.
