Council to involve members in debate about supervision
Now that it has reactivated the debate on the professional
accountability of pharmacists in the supply and use of medicines, the
Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society is going to take the debate
to its branches and regions.
At its October meeting, the Council agreed that
it was time to review the issue of supervision as a key part of the modernisation
of the frameworks within which pharmacists operate in primary and secondary
care. Then, on 6 November, as a preliminary to further debate, members
of the Council, along with senior members of the Society's staff, spent
a full day discussing possible future scenarios and their potential implications
for the future of pharmacy practice. Recognising that it would be important
for the Society's wider membership also to engage in the debate at this
early stage, it was agreed that the issue would be developed as the basis
of a presentation for use in the Society's branches and regions.
The President, Marshall Davies, said: "This is a
far-reaching and complex issue which we recognise is of great importance
and interest. We think it would be valuable to offer our members the opportunity
to explore the issues early on in our policy-making process.
"We plan to be in a position to present the issues
on this debate to our branches and regions through the participation of
the members of the Council and senior staff early in the new year. We
also plan to engage the pharmacy press in helping us to help pharmacists
to think about this important issue."
