Gehe faces inquiry into Irish acquisition

Gehe's acquisition the 30-pharmacy Unicare chain in the Irish Republic may be referred to the country's Competition Authority.

The deal would make Gehe a dominant player in the Irish market. Over the past six months it has acquired 43 pharmacies, including the Unicare chain, putting it ahead of Boots The Chemists, which has 29 branches. Gehe also owns the Irish pharmaceutical wholesaler Cahill May Roberts.

Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister Mary Harney is assessing the Unicare bid to see if it should be referred to the Competition Authority. The authority has the power to block the bid if it is felt to reduce competition or consumer choice.
