Noel Wicks (right) receives his award from Chris Etherington, managing director of UniChem Ltd

Campus Pharmacy at the University of Stirling and Noel Wicks, one of its joint owners, were named overall winners of the UniChem Great Business Awards competition during a gala dinner held on 16 November.

Mr Wicks, a past-president of the British Pharmaceutical Students Association, was praised by the judges for being in contention in each of the three subsections of the awards; business development, promoting the business and building relationships with the community. He has established links with local health care professionals, run holiday travel advice sessions and established a website (PJ, 28 July, p114).

As overall winner, Mr Wicks has won two places at the 2002 UniChem convention which is to be held in Mauritius from 20–28 September. The three category winners received £1,000 each in holiday travel vouchers.

The category winners were:

Business development, Shailesh Amin of Nories Pharmacy, Horsham

Promoting the business, Kevin Brennan of K. M. Brennan (Chemists) Ltd, Leicester

Building relationships with the community, Janet Gallagher of Janet S. Gallagher Pharmacy, Saltcoats, Ayrshire.

Lila Thakerar of Shaftesbury Pharmacy, South Harrow, received a special commendation in the building relationships category.

Mike Barbour of Thaxted Pharmacy, Thaxted, Essex, won the UniChem Chemist & Druggist award for young pharmacists for an essay on pharmacy in 2020. Mr Barbour told The Journal that he foresaw a natural progression for pharmacy into services. These would be provided by either local consortia of independent pharmacies, multiple groups or mail-order pharmacies based on what primary care trusts or their successors wanted. He has won £2,000 and an opportunity to visit Alliance UniChem pharmacies in five European countries.
