TributesD'Arcy A memorial event for the late Professor Patrick Francis D'Arcy (PJ, 6 October, p491) will take place on Monday 3 December at 7pm in the Great Hall, Lanyon Building, Queen's University Belfast. Friends and colleagues of Professor D'Arcy who wish to attend the event should contact Libby Neill at the Belfast school of pharmacy (tel 02890 335800; e-mail e.neill@qub.ac.uk). DAVID R. WILLIAMS writes: The news of Patrick D'Arcy's death saddened me greatly. I first met Pat when I went up to the "Square" in 1953, since at that time he was a demonstrator in the pharmacology laboratory. It was through him that I developed my own interest in this subject. We became great friends and had numerous professional and personal contacts during the ensuing years. During his time at Riker, we sat on the same board and collaborated closely. One of the kindest men I have ever known, he also had superb management skills and was a master of his subject. It was Pat's eminence in pharmacology that led to his appointment to the Medicines Commission, of which he was an active member from 1978 to 1993. A sincere friend, he will be sadly missed. Hastings In a tribute to the late Roy Hastings (PJ, l September, p309), D. W. HIGGINS writes: I first met Roy Hastings in 1950 when we were both students at Kingston College of Further Education and the following year we moved on to Chelsea School of Pharmacy in Manresa Road, where we worked together for practicals. Roy had completed his National Service and preregistration training with Timothy Whites before attending Kingston College, and so joined the register in August 1953. When I completed my preregistration year the following August my registration number was consecutive to Roy's. Roy gained experience as a community pharmacist manager before starting his first pharmacy business in Balham. We retained regular contact and when I purchased my pharmacy in Surbiton Roy was a great help not the least giving me free storage facilities for furniture. Roy had a health scare in the late 1960s and decided to ease up a little and concentrate on locum work. I was able to enjoy some wonderful holidays with my family knowing that my pharmacy was in the hands of an excellent locum. It was not long before Roy felt able to get back into ownership and he purchased a pharmacy in Farnham, Surrey, which he ran successfully for several years. Our professional lives crossed again when independently we were both persuaded to join our respective local pharmaceutical committees by Frank Wilson (the then secretary of South West London and Surrey LPC ). Roy was typical of community pharmacists. He was hard working and caring for his customers and fellow pharmacists. I am proud to have known him. Our sympathies are for his widow Margaret. It is sad that he and Margaret had only recently completed a move from Surrey to the Isle of Man. Rogers In a tribute to the late Kenneth Rogers (see Deaths), KEITH STEAD writes: I met Ken Rogers when we were both "freshers" and we shared a room in registered lodgings of University College Nottingham from 1943 to 1945. During our studies there, a group of six (five Boots apprentices and one from Savory & Moore) Ken, myself, Maurice Goldhill, Ray Osborne, Ken Wilson and Norman West came together. We kept in touch and met from time to time during military service and subsequent careers in Britain and across the world. Since retirement we have had a reunion each year till now. Ken returned to Chelsea in 1948 to complete his pharmaceutical chemist qualification and then returned to Boots and had a successful career as an analyst in the analytical laboratory in the Beeston works. Our sympathy goes out to his wife Sheila, their three sons and eight grandchildren. |
