Diabetes review wins student award

A review of the services community pharmacists can provide to patients with diabetes has won two students from Sunderland school of pharmacy the first Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Pharmacy School award.

Paul Aliu and Diarmuid Coughan interviewed 30 pharmacists in Sunderland and County Durham. Of these, all were selling glucose testing meters and being visited by more than 10 patients with diabetes each day. Two-thirds felt confident about their involvement in diabetes management, but only two were running instore diabetes clinics. The two have won a bursary of £1,750 and a work placement at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. The school of pharmacy will receive £3,000.
