NHS draws up specification for electronic prescribing systems in hospitalsA basic specification for electronic prescribing systems to be used by National Health Service trusts has been produced by Liverpool Health Authority’s pharmacy practice unit. The document is a step towards reaching a Government target for 35 per cent of acute hospitals to have electronic patient records systems that include electronic prescribing by the end of 2002. All acute hospitals are expected to have such systems by the end of 2005. The specification covers hospital pharmacy systems, electronic prescribing and drug administration. It has been written in a modular format so trusts can pick and choose sections which are relevant to their needs. The specification covers system requirements and functionality, with sections dedicated to discharge prescribing, cytotoxics, total parenteral nutrition, centralised intravenous additive services, and paediatric prescribing. Purchasing and management are also covered. The specification is to be followed by a document on implementation. "National electronic prescribing, administration and pharmacy specification for NHS trusts" is available on the internet at www.liverpool-ha.org.uk/pdf/Nation%7E1.pdf. |
