Eight pharmacists designated as fellows
Eight pharmacists have been designated as fellows of
the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the Society’s panel of fellows. They
are Professor Alison Blenkinsopp, Adrienne de Mont, Dr Tom Duffy, Professor
Gary Martin, Charles Morecroft, Helen Remington, Brian Spencer and Dr
Stephen Thomas.
The following biographical information is based
on material provided by the panel of fellows to assist in identifying
the pharmacists concerned. It does not necessarily represent the reasons
for designation as fellows.
Professor Alison Blenkinsopp, who registered
in 1981, was in 1999 appointed to a personal chair as professor of the
practice of pharmacy at Keele University, where she had been senior lecturer
in health services research since 1995. She was previously director of
the NHS Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (England), from 1991
to 1995. She was a member of the Society’s Council from 1988 to 1996 and
has served on its pharmacy practice research awards panel since 1995.
She has been a member of the NHS research and development commissioning
group on asthma since 1997 and has been editor of the International
Journal of Pharmacy Practice since 1998.
Adrienne de Mont is a freelance pharmaceutical
journalist who registered in 1967. She has been contributing editor for
Chemist & Druggist since 1978, following five years on the
C&D staff as technical editor and then assistant editor. Since
1995, she has also been commissioning editor for the National Pharmaceutical
Association Yearbook. She has served for more than 10 years on the committee
of the Society’s East Metropolitan branch, including periods as secretary
and chairman. She served on the committee of the Medical Journalists Association
from 1990 to 2000.
Dr Tom Duffy is an industrial pharmacist
who registered in 1973. He is founder and senior partner of Lowden International.
His previous positions include quality development manager, Glaxo Manufacturing
Services (1992–94), head of the Society’s Medicines Testing Laboratory
(1985–89), and regional quality controller, Mersey Regional Health Authority
(1976–85). He has been a member of Committee B of the British Pharmacopoeia
since 1999. He has represented the Society on the sterilisers committee
of the British Standards Institution (1996–98) and on the Qualified Person
Panel of Assessors (since 1994).
Professor Gary Martin, who registered in
1979, was recently appointed professor of formulation science in the department
of pharmacy at King’s College London, where he had been reader in pharmaceutics
since 1991. From 1982 to 1991 he was acting head of the pharmaceutical
sciences research group and lecturer/senior lecture in pharmacy at Brighton
Polytechnic. He was an elected member and treasurer of the Society’s Pharmaceutical
Sciences Group Committee from 1994 to 1997. He has recently been appointed
to the editorial board of the International Journal of Pharmaceutics.
Charles Morecroft, who registered in 1976,
is a community pharmacist who is currently undertaking a PhD studentship
at the University of Manchester. He has a degree in psychology and is
involved with the Society’s Listening Friends Scheme for pharmacists suffering
from stress. In 1998 the Society awarded him a Galen award and a Hugh
Linstead fellowship to support a pharmacy practice research project, and
he recently received a further Linstead fellowship (PJ, 3 November,
p661).
Helen Remington, who registered in 1977,
is chief pharmacist at Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust, Cambridge, where she is
also general manager, sterile services and medical records, and team lead,
re-engineering projects. She was previously chief pharmacist, patient
services, St James’s University Hospital (1991–96). She is currently president
of the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists. She has been a member of the Society’s
Council since 1998 has chaired its Law and Ethics Committee (1999–2000).
She was appointed a member of the Department of Health medicines advisory
group earlier this year.
Brian Spencer is an agricultural and veterinary
pharmacist who registered in 1956. He has been an elected member of the
Society’s Veterinary Pharmacists Group Committee since 1976. Over the
years he has served on the committees of more than one of the Society’s
branches and has been vice-chairman of the Wolverhampton and Walsall branch.
Dr Stephen Thomas is a hospital pharmacist
who registered in 1974. He is director of the Surgical Materials Testing
Laboratory based at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan.
The SMTL’s biosurgical research unit won an innovation award in the 2001
Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for its production of sterile maggots for
cleaning wounds (PJ, 28 April p571). Dr Thomas is a member of the
British Pharmacopoeia surgical materials consultative group, the All-Wales
Contracting Committee for Dressings and Medical Disposables, and the British
Standards Institution committee for dressings and medical textiles. He
serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Wound Care and
MIMS.
