Tribute
Curry In a tribute to the late David
John Curry, SIMON QUINN writes: I knew David Curry over eight years, as a fellow expatriate in the Gulf.
David's colourful career took off after he obtained his PhD in medicinal
chemistry from the United States; his itchy feet took him from Northwick
Park Hospital to Wormwood Scrubs (serving time purely on a pharmaceutical
basis), then to the more exotic climes of Brazil and then the Sultanate
of Oman. Against formidable cultural challenges, he worked industriously
as chief pharmacist, Ministry of Defence, to raise standards. Following
him in that job, I kept hearing of that most helpful Brit, always patiently
tackling numerous logistic problems. His professional interests were not
narrow, ranging from an interest in testing medicinal gases at the 40
medical centres and three hospitals throughout the Oman MOD network to
formulation of cosmetic preparations in Brazil. He was a hard act to follow
when I succeeded him in the job in 1997. After meeting and marrying Anna in 1995 (for which I had the honour
of playing Cupid), and two sons Steven and Robert later, they swopped
Oman for the cooler climes of Surrey and eventually Taunton. A gradual
easing into retirement was sadly cut short by a diagnosis of renal tumour,
discovered only through an "innocent" persistent cough from a pulmonary
secondary. He was a likeable man, and his was an extraordinary live. |
