Team that doubles quitting rate wins smoking cessation award

A practice team from Carnoustie Medical Group, Tayside, that includes a pharmacist, has won the Doctor magazine smoking cessation award. The award is for work that has seen a doubling of the number of smokers quitting after attending its clinics.

Practice pharmacist Jill Maclean said that their scheme is based on each member of the team giving presentations at a series of nine clinics. The pharmacist reviews the notes of any patient considered for amfebutamone (Zyban) treatment. Prescriptions for amfebutamone are issued for two weeks at a time with follow up by the pharmacist and general practitioner.

Before the new team approach, smoking cessation clinics were attended by around eight patients of whom one or two would quit. The new sessions have doubled quit rates.
